In Brief…
In 1887 the Higginson family journeyed to Sardis from Ontario on the newly completed CPR. They brought with them a boxcar loaded with family possessions and some livestock. They bought 120 acres of land from the Bicknell family who were moving to Columbia Valley because Sardis was getting too crowded. Over the years they raised sheep, established a dairy and grew fruit. In 1982 Heather and Don Forbes along with their family moved onto the 70 acres of the farm owned by Heather’s Mom and Dad, Edith and Archie Barr. They started up a commercial market garden that was in operation for a few years. In 1986 Don went back to teaching and the family had to decide what to do with the land. Heather’s cousin was related to Gordie McKay, who had designed and built many golf courses in B.C. He believed that the land was well-suited for a par three golf course. In 1988, Gordie drew up the course layout, financing was arranged, and construction began in June 1989. On July 1, 1990 Kinkora Golf Course was opened to the public.
